so here's the thing. generally cybertronians from the transformers franchise work pretty logically, albeit with chronic New Powers As The Plot Demands. they have two modes: vehicle and bipedal.
here's the thing.
chop shop does not turn into a vehicle. chop shop turns into many spiders.
no seriously
within the canon there are robots that can combine voltron style and make a bigger robot. most of the time they just turn into their individual limbs and nearly all the time the combined form is about 100ft tall, because it's made up of 20ft tall robots. chop shop is unique in this regard; he's only about 25-30ft tall, as the little spiders that form his limbs are only around 6ft tall.
other combiners are also individuals in their own rights, though chop shop is a strange mix of the two. the spiders are all him and he is all the spiders, but they each have enough individuality to be able to function alone and have their own personalities - or at the very least, each have parts of chop shop's combined personality within them. they refer to each other separately within the show; chop shop calls his right arm righty and righty refers to chop shop as boss, and their clame to infamy in-universe was working as a one-man heist crew.
think garnet from steven universe if ruby and sapphire were the same gem and could also communicate with their minds. and... also kleptomaniacs. the others are all aware of what each is doing and if chop shop is combined with one arm or leg off, he is aware of what the missing limb is doing. or voltron, if each lion actually spoke and had a terrible cockney accent.
CHARACTER NAME: Chop Shop CANON: Transformers RID (aligned continuity) TIMELINE: Post Decepticon Island Part 2 – once his stasis pod has been returned to Cybertron with the others AGE: ~several million years
PERSONALITY: When the Cybertronian civil war ended in Autobot victory, the main post-war efforts were focused around rebuilding their ruined planet and society. This was a new world where faction branding didn’t really matter anymore, but for the Decepticons that had been aboard the Alchemor - a prison ship that crush landed on Earth - that didn’t matter. All of them were imprisoned for crimes during and after the war for things you’d expect of the Designated Villains and many of them were enraged at the idea of being caught and forced into their prisons again.
Chop Shop, in this regard, isn’t so different from his Earth-bound Decepticon brethren. When faced with the Autobots that wanted to lock him back up he was overly aggressive and didn’t hesitate to engage them in battle. Where he differs is… just about every other aspect. Even as a low ranking Decepticon faced against Autobots, Chop Shop doesn’t display the violence and bloodthirstiness that’s common to others of his position, rather acting out of a sense of self-preservation. He has no desire to prove himself or further the Decepticon agenda, preferring to keep to himself and focus on his own goals to escape the planet so he can be left to do his own thing (which mostly involves theft) while the other escaped prisoners banded together under one who wanted to re-establish Decepticon dominance on Earth. This speaks volumes about his loyalties, or lack thereof; despite his history with the Decepticons, now that the war is over Chop Shop no longer seems to have much stock in them, and why would he?
He never states where he wants to go or what he’s planning to do, but for Chop Shop, just being together is the most important thing. Combiners are rarities amongst the Cybertronian race, and Chop Shop is a rarity among rarities. He’s the only known Combiner composed of minicons and subsequently the only one that, fully together, is around the size of an average Cybertronian standing at around 25-30ft tall. He operates as a one-man heist crew while he’s scavenging for spaceship parts to leave Earth with each component more than capable of completing its task independently. Chop Shop may have something of a hivemind that works in perfect hamony, but his individual components are individuals enough to be able to function alone or when the main body is incapacitated and have their own quirks and personalities. That being said, when they are split up forcibly or get separated, their main goal is always to get back to the other; he is self-obsessed in the most literal way possible. Who wouldn’t be, after being together for millions of years? Well, that and if a spider goes missing then Chop Shop is out an arm or a leg. Literally. When he’s reunited with Righty after a brief stint apart, the two are clearly delighted to be back together again with Chop Shop even commending Righty for his efforts.
As selfishly goal orientated as he is, Chop Shop isn’t without something of a conscience. While Righty was separated from the rest of Chop Shop, he was captured along with the Autobots who had put the rest of his components into stasis. Their Human Sidekicks™ got into trouble with another Decepticon and Righty was freed by the Autobot leader and asked to help. After initially going to leave, he looks back to see the humans coming close to defeat and shakes his head, seemingly annoyed at his own decision to help them. Absolutely nothing was stopping him leave the situation – he chose to do the right thing simply because he could. It could be argued that the humans were no threat to him, that he owed it to the Autobots for being freed, or that they had done nothing to him – even with these flimsy excuses, the fact that he bothered to help at all makes him more altruistic than most other Decepticons encountered in the series. When he’s freed and escapes the stasis for the second time, he also choses to run and leave, rather than try to extract any kind of vengeance on the Autobots who had been significantly weakened by issues within their team.
Chop Shop is… a selfish sort of-Decepticon made out of a stack of kleptomaniac spiders standing on each other’s metaphorical shoulders. He has some sense of a moral code and isn’t interested in wanton destruction and fighting, preferring a pragmatic approach that is more likely to result in him getting away with what he had wanted to steal and without the chance of ending up back in prison. He’s not a good or friendly person and will usually put his own needs before anyone else’s, but under the right circumstances he’ll do the right thing for the right reasons.
Also, he’s space British. For some reason. Elaborate Snatch reference? More likely than you think.
ABILITIES: Cybertronian Physiology: There are certain things all Cybertronians are capable of as a baseline, and naturally Chop Shop is no exception. He has the durability expected of a 25ft robot as well as internal scanners and comms. Given the Cybertronian physiology, he also will not be as inconvenienced as an organic character would be by certain injuries; losing limbs is more of a slight annoyance to them, generally they are likely to pull through unless their spark is damaged or their head is destroyed. Chop Shop is also incredibly strong for a Decepticon of his size—he was easily able to punch Autobots the same height across a hangar in one swing. In addition to this, Chop Shop is an expect at hand-to-hand combat, even when he is unarmed. Literally. He can fight with no arms. Also, his limbs can fight on their own? He’s kind of a nightmare.
Gestalt: As a combiner, Chop Shop is made up of five smaller mechanoid components that form his main body. When he splits apart, his limbs and torso turn into robot spiders that are around 6ft in height and 9ft in length. Each one can speak, and while Chop Shop is mostly a hive mind, the spiders seem to have some degree of personality. Lefty (his left arm, shockingly) is said to be slightly cowardly and prefers to be combined, for example. Each component can work on its own and they refer to each other like independents, essentially making him the ultimate multi-tasker. His components can also stick to walls, though Chop Shop combined doesn’t appear to have this ability. Finally, he’s been shown able to take over Cybertronian minibots by plugging them into his combination ports where his other limbs would usually go. That being said, they can override his will and fight back.
Tasers: Chop Shop’s main weapon are his tasers that are loaded into his hands. They deliver a shock strong enough to paralyze whatever he has his mitts on as well as incapacitate them for a short time. When he splits up into his components, they all have the same tasing ability, though slightly diminished. For (ostensible) aesthetic reasons, the electricity is red.
Technological knowledge: While stuck on Earth, Chop Shop was able to collect all the parts for a spaceship in an attempt to leave the planet. He did this working alone, meaning he knows how to do it all himself in addition to programming the systems. His rap sheet also mentions he worked as a one-man heist crew, so he is well versed in skills that relate such as infiltration and general… sneakiness.
Technological possession: Not in the traditional way, because why would this creature do anything that easy? Chop Shop can plug himself into certain types of tech to either replace his limbs with or interface with them. No, not like that. He has an amount of control over physical movement but if what he's interfacing with has its own will (Li stop laughing) his own programming can be overriden.
